Happy Birthday Top Shot (My Top Shot Journey)

Hello! Welcome to a very special blog! Today is the day, NBA Top Shot community celebrates 1 year birthday of this project! Yes, that’s right, on October 1st, 2020, right after game 1 of the NBA finals, Top Shot opened the beta to the public, what a crazy rollercoaster ride it has been since. As soon as I found out about this celebration, I had an idea in my mind to make this blog. In the last 5 months doing these blogs for you, I’ve done a bunch of fun ones, Top 10’s, community blogs, weekly updates. Today I wanted to do something special, and something I haven’t done before is a blog about myself and recapping my Top Shot journey, if you are interested, let’s start this, and I’ll try to keep it short.

So I guess to go back to the beginning of my love for Top Shot, we have to go way back, to me as a kid and falling in love with basketball! It happened to me at a very young age, 6 or 7, I always enjoyed playing the game, watching the game, basketball just spoke to me, doesn’t hurt that I was really growing fast and everyone around was saying “Alex, you should play basketball”.

One of my earliest memories in life was seeing Kobe-Shaq Lakers, that team made me fall in love with the game, later Kobe Bryant became my favorite player, maybe a coincidence but he was drafted to the NBA the same day I was born.

One day I dreamed about playing in the NBA, and I was working hard for it, by the age of 14 my height was 6'6, and I was playing pretty well, still remember back there my coach saying “Alex, stop shooting threes, that’s not what bigs do”, oh well. Curious case but I’m still 6'6 right now, so it was really hard to adapt my game as I was always moved from position to position.

As you might figure I didn’t make it to the league, and my dream was never to play in college or overseas, lucky basketball wasn’t my only love, I always was curious and fascinated by many things, the movie industry being one of them for example, the same effect as basketball, it made me wanna tell stories, create stories and experiences stories.

But let’s stay focused on my basketball, since 2015 or so I have watched this show on NBA TV and YouTube called The Starters, for every passion in my life I have a podcast/show I always tune in and am happy to do so. They were my basketball version of that. Now knows as No Dunks, I remember watching their show in early February of this year, and hearing I think Trey Kerby mentioning Top Shot and how about he about to quit his job cause of digital highlights cards, haha.

So I got curious, what is Top Shot, I did a little research and I found it amazing right from the beginning honestly. I have always been a collector, so the idea that you can own and trade digital highlights was a cool new way to me. And the fact that this was an official NBA product, got me on board quickly.

On February 14, Valentine’s day, I created my account. At the time I was looking at it just as a fun thing, you know, I bought 2 moments on my first day, but I was so interested, of course, I couldn’t stop. In the coming days, I started researching more about Top Shot and buying more moments! Was lucky too, cause on my second day I was able to score my first pack, Cool Cats drop 2. I got my NY boy Julius Randle, I was pumped!

Many of you know the story, but I wasn’t the only one who found Top Shot around that time, that first week was crazy, and if at first, I started my Top Shot collection for fun, I very quickly saw an investment opportunity but the reason I’m here writing right now, the reason I love Top Shot is the community!

In those first days I started to watch a bunch of YouTube videos, shout out to Jennifer Sutto for being the first, which is funny cause her first video was on February 14 too. Reading Twitter and just trying to find as much good info as possible.

I wasn’t really active on Twitter or Discord before Top Shot, but as you know it changed too, and this was the place where I found so many smart, kind, amazing people, they impacted my journey, inspired me, I learned from them, and some of them became my friends!

After some time being in the social world of Top Shot, I decided to start a blog that you reading right now, it was honestly just for fun, I felt like I have something to say, I have ideas and I wanna share them. This is my advice to you, everyone has ideas, everyone has something to share, but you need to do that extra step, start typing or recording, sounds simple, and it’s not easy for different reasons, but if you want it, you can achieve it!

Top Shot opened so many awesome things for me, I found new friends, I got into the NFT space, I collect my favorite NBA and WNBA moments (and packs), which despite me being a huge basketball fan, I’m more invested than ever now. Speaking of WNBA, in my life outside of Top Shot I never had friends that I can talk WNBA about, all my friends are just NBA fans, so that was one of the things that really made me happy that I found so many people, especially now after Top Shot launched WNBA, so many people that share my love for the league and I can chat about it with them!

So why do I love Top Shot? It’s just fun and interesting but also so much more, never ever I thought that this gonna have such an effect on my life when I was creating my account 7 and a half months ago, and yes, we are still early! So many people on Twitter and Discord that I wanna shout out, from some that I might’ve talked to just once to some that I talk to almost daily!

Anyways, I continue to talk about Top Shot more, but this is already long enough. Something I missed, ahh, my favorite movie is Back to the Future, my favorite song is White Christmas, favorite food is NY style pizza, what else.

Happy Birthday, Top Shot! And when I say that I mean Happy Birthday to you, because Top Shot is people, it’s me, it’s you and I hope you enjoy this journey, there are so many reasons why people love Top Shot, but in the end of the day, I just hope it makes you happy!
